Remote Vehicle Access for Fleets: How It Works

Discover how remote door unlocking works in commercial fleets. Technology, compatibility, security, and real-world use cases.
What is remote vehicle access
Remote vehicle access allows a fleet manager or an automated system to unlock a vehicle's doors from anywhere, using an internet connection. The engine immobilizer prevents the vehicle from starting while it is parked with the keys inside, ensuring security. When the authorized driver arrives, the system deactivates the immobilizer and unlocks the doors. The physical keys are inside the car — in the glove box or a dedicated key holder. The driver takes the keys and drives normally.
CAN-CONTROL technology
The technology that makes remote door unlocking possible is CAN-CONTROL — a device that connects to the vehicle's CAN bus (Controller Area Network), the internal communication network that modern vehicles use to coordinate electronic systems. By sending the right CAN commands, the device can lock and unlock doors, and in some configurations, enable or disable the engine starter.
Vehicle compatibility
CAN-CONTROL technology is compatible with approximately 1,300 vehicle models from major manufacturers: Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, and many more. Compatibility depends on the vehicle's CAN bus protocol, which varies by make, model, and year.
Security and encryption
Security is the most common concern about remote vehicle access, and rightly so. The Fletaro system uses end-to-end encryption (TLS 1.3) for all communication between the mobile app, server, and vehicle device. Unlock commands are authenticated, time-limited, and tied to specific reservations or access windows.
Real-world use cases
Car rental companies use remote access for 24/7 unmanned pickup and return. The customer books online, arrives at the vehicle location at any hour, completes a digital inspection, unlocks the door, grabs the keys from inside, and drives away. Returns work in reverse: park, leave keys inside, lock via app, done. This eliminates office staffing for handovers and enables bookings outside business hours.
